Aubree Stykes returns to hospital for surgery after medical setback

GEORGETOWN, Ohio – The family of a 14-month-old girl who lost her mother in a fatal, and unsolved, shooting in August experienced a setback Saturday morning.

Aubree Stykes was re-admitted to the hospital for emergency surgery, according to a message on the Stykes’ family fund Facebook page .

The toddler was shot in the head and her mother, Brittany, was shot twice along U.S. 68 on Aug. 28. Brittany, 22-years-old and pregnant, died in the truck she was driving and discovered by a passing motorist.

Aubree was released from the hospital on Sept. 17 after what her family thought was successful surgery at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center. A bullet had entered her skull, hit her brain, and exited, according to Shane Stykes, Aubree’s father.

"Amazing recovery,” Shane told  9 On Your Side last week. “You wouldn't believe it if you'd seen it. I can't tell you if she's 100 percent, because something may come up down the road. She's still young and developing. But she acts now like she was before she was shot."

The Stykes family Facebook page indicated Aubree was dealing with a possible Meningitis infection and there was fluid leaking from the incisions where she received surgery.

“They are having to re-do the surgery she had a month ago. We all the know the power of prayer so please everyone please say a prayer for her to pull through this,” the Facebook post stated.

Brown County police continue to look for leads in the case, having recently recovered security video from a McDonald’s that they hope helps them reconstruct the series of events surrounded Brittany Stykes’ death.

Police have not named a suspect in the case.

WCPO reporter Jason Law contributed to this report.
