MLB umpire to visit hospitalized vets in Fort Thomas

FORT THOMAS, Ky. -- Major League Baseball Umpire Jerry Layne will make a special appearance at the Fort Thomas VA Nursing Home on Wednesday.

Layne will be visiting with hospitalized vets as a part of the Veteran Affairs Voluntary Service (VAVS) program.

There are 172 VA medical centers in the U.S. which treat over 2.3 million veterans. Many veterans spend long, lonely hours in the medical centers. The VAVA provides company for these vets.

Layne began volunteering with the program after being recruited by another umpire who was actively involved with VAVS -- Larry Barnett.
