Meteor lights up night sky over Ohio

Residents across the Tri-State received quite the light show Friday night.

At about 11:30 p.m. multiple people reported seeing the bright flash across the night sky.

Teresa Brannan of Hillsboro said her family was outside at the time.

“Were outside at about 11:30 p.m., Sept. 27, when my three children and me witnessed a bright streak of of light going from west to east across the sky. It lit up the entire sky and ground. It appeared to be a meteor,” Brannan said.

Similar reports came in from Lebanon, eastern Indiana, multiple cities around Northern Kentucky, and as far north as Cleveland.

The American Meteor Society charted multiple reports of seeing a meteor around the same time as well on their website. Reports started coming in at about 11:05 p.m., the website reports .

People across the Tri-State have made similar reports throughout the week.

While the perceived increase of visible meteors may be alarming to some, it's nothing to worry about. The Cincinnati Observatory’s executive director, Craig Niemi, says sightings of meteors are common this time of year.

"People are seeing these things this time of year because it is getting darker earlier and more people are going out when it is darker in the morning and they are seeing more things in the night sky," said Niemi who helped host a stargazing event Saturday at the observatory.
