Cincinnati beer blogger and WCPO.com contributor Danny Spears, who goes by the moniker “BeerMumbo ,” recently got a taste of fame after a recent post to his blog .
Spears promised his fans that if his Facebook page got 1,000 likes, he would drink one of his HuDey beers from 1988.
During that season, the Cincinnati Bengals played in the January 22, 1989 Super Bowl. Spears said the No. 1 song in the country was “My Prerogative,” the “Ghostbusters II” trailer had just come out and he was only 9 years old.
The blogger said he put it off for a bit but his readers won’t let him welch on the bet.
So with much trepidation, Spears readied himself for the worst beer of his life and got his brother to film the experience.
When they filmed the video, Spears said he wasn’t just worried about how the beer would taste.
“[I was worried] that my brother would do whatever he could to make it worse. I also thought about whether my life insurance policy covered beer chugs,” Spears said.
He said the HuDey beer was apparently stored in harsh conditions and resulted in “rotten egg/feet aromas and flavors”
The resulting video of his “fail” went viral on the Internet and has been picked up by hundreds of media outlets such as People Magazine, Huffington Post, 700WLW, The Telegraph, MSN, Dailymotion and many more.
He said the resulting media blitz netted him more than 200,000 views on his website in four days. By Sunday, the YouTube video had been viewed almost 40,000 times.
“Apparently, people enjoy the humor in opening a 26-year-old beer and trying to drink it. I personally know tons of people who could have actually done it. I failed,” Spears said.
He said his inbox has been flooded since the video went live.
“It has been fun. I hope it brightened up at least one person's day with a smile,” Spears said.
When asked if he’d try again if his Facebook page go to 2,000 likes, Spears said, “Yes. I have an old Top Hat to try along with another HuDey. Now that I know survival is likely, I'm ready.”
