CINCINNATI -- One of my favorite breweries in town is Fifty West and when I spoke with them earlier, I was pretty excited to hear about the new upcoming events they had planned for February. Without further ado, here are some exciting new developments to come to the brewery.
Tuesday, Feb. 4th – The Debut of Penny Flips Tuesday
No, don’t be outside trying to flip over that orange beauty that is sweet PNY LANE. Instead, simply come inside and flip a coin and if you call it correctly, voila your delicious craft beer is just a penny. Guess wrong, and your pay normal price. This will take place every Tuesday going forward. I’ve been waiting for an opportunity to use my two-headed coin. Heads is it!
Wednesday, Feb. 5th – Trivia Night
Teams of 4 (or less) will compete in a 3-round trivia game with free VIP beer fest tickets from Fifty West on the line. The winning team will join them at the Cincy Beer Fest to help pour beers out of Penny Lane! Trivia starts at 7PM sharp!
Thursday, Feb. 6th – Debut of Mother Firkin Thursday
Firk me? No, firk you! Every Mother Firkin’ Thursday they will debut a cask beer along with a suggested food pairing. This will take place every Thursday going forward (unless otherwise noted). Your damn Firkin’ right it will. This Thursday (2/6), One Way Street, a single hop Motueka Pale Ale is being released.
Thursday, Feb. 6th – Fifty West / Zip’s new beer collaboration (Cincinnati Beer Week Event)
Note: This event is at Zip’s Café. Fifty West Brewing Company and Zip’s Café will be releasing a special collaboration beer that has been in the works for months. “Mike Burke, the GM at Zip’s, approached us about doing a collaboration awhile back. Mike was the guy that connected us with our chef John Tomain and after seeing how well that turned out we figured if we can find some synergy lets have some fun with it. We sat down and it didn’t take long until the pieces started falling into place and 1926 was born.” said Bobby Slattery with Fifty West.
1926, a collaborative Amber will be hitting Zip’s taps at 5:00 pm sharp on Thursday, February 6th. The name 1926 is reference to a very important year for both companies. For Zip’s, 1926 was the year they opened their doors to the public and Cincinnatians have been getting their cheeseburger fix ever since. As for Fifty West, there would be no Fifty West without Route 50 and 1926 marked the year president Calvin Coolidge gave “The loneliest road in America” the honor of becoming known to travelers around the country as Route 50.
1926 is an American Amber Style Ale clocking in at 5.6% ABV and a solid 40 IBUs. “When Mike and I sat down to engineer this beer we wanted something that could stand up and pair well with Zip’s burgers. We settled on a balance of malty sweetness and firm bitterness that would perfectly compliment the savory Zip’s burgers Cincinnatians love,” says Fifty West Bremaster Blake Horseburgh.
Along with the introduction of 1926, Zip’s will also be tapping Speedbump Kolsch, Thirty-37 Session Pale Ale, and Coffee Please from Fifty West Brewing Company. There will also be an homage to Blake’s roots with the taps being filled out by Jackie O’s with the tapping of Raz Wheat, Mandala Citra, Java the Stout, and Dark Apparition.
Sunday, Feb. 9th – Board Games Sunday
Feel free to bring any your favorite board/card game by the brewery on Sunday to relax and sip on some local Cincy libations while participating in some friendly competition!
Tuesday, Feb. 11th – Special Bottle Release, the start of the Remus’ Revenge series.
The barrel aged series is known as the Remus’ Revenge series as the barrel aging takes place in the basement where George Remus used to supply bootlegged alcohol during Prohibition. On the Tuesday of the release, all those purchasing the bottles will be walking down into the basement to get their bottle. Beers being released are the 10&2 Barley Wine that’s been aging in bourbon barrels and Ardad’s Advice (Batch 50) which was the 50th batch they brewed and has been cellar aging for quite some time. Quantities are extremely limited and once they are gone they are gone. Specialty bottled beers will be released every two months as part of the series. Oh, and Ardad’s Advice (Batch 50) was even brewed using an unconventional brewing method, to see for yourself click here.
Wednesday, Feb 12th – The Cross-Town Showdown between 50 West and Listermann.
Will include a five course meal served by the brewers themselves and each will be paired with a 50 West and Listermann beer.
Thursday, Feb. 13th – Fat Head Brew collaboration
I’m pretty stoked about this collaboration. Not many details on this yet but this fat head approves. If you are not familiar with Fat Head’s beers you should be. Fat Head’s operates a production brewery & tasting room in Middleburg Heights as well as a brewpub in North Olmsted, a restaurant in Pittsburgh and coming soon a brewpub in Portland, Oregon. Fat Head’s racked up 3 medals at the 2013 Great American Beer Festival. Hop JuJu won gold in the Imperial India Pale Ale category; bottles of which will be released in February. Trail Head took home silver in the Fresh Hop Ale category and Black Night also won silver in the German-Style Schwarzbier category. Long story short, these guys make some great beers. For a full list of their beer, click here. I can’t wait to hear what the collaboration will be. I’ll be keeping my ears open and will let you know if I hear anything.
Friday, Feb. 14th – Valentine’s day & new beer release
A raspberry chocolate porter released and served with house made dessert. You want to score some major points with the old lady this year? Take her down to 50W and treat her right. Who knows, if she drinks enough you might even get to 2nd base.
Wednesday, Feb. 19th – Beer gatherings/classes
The first in a series for beer enthusiasts and novices. 50 West will be holding small gatherings/classes on the wonderful world of beer. The first class will be called beer 101 and will touch on the basics. More in depth and complicated classes will be offered in the future.
So, that’s a shipload of 50W fun coming your way next month. I think I may just look to spend the night in the cellar from 2/11 – 2/14 if they’ll let me.
Sunday, Feb. 23rd – Brew Tour Sunday (Cincinnati Beer Week Event)
Tour of FiftyWest Brewery involving Brewmaster’s Choice flight, informative tour, and take home pint (filled with beer of your choice after the tour)…Come learn the secrets behind the beer! $15
A few other things on the horizon:
- You may seem a membership/awards pint club start up after Cincinnati Beer Week. I’ll refrain from giving out the name just yet but if you use your noodle you might be able to figure this one out. I like the concept they are floating around and I know I’ll be racking up a bunch of cool swag in short order should this get underway.
- The Jallopy American Wheat that I discussed in the BREWumor Mill has now become an experimental summer wheat beer. Limited distribution of this was leaked out to get some feedback. It’s currently available in the taproom.
- Look for the fellas to brew up a special Maibock for Bockfest this year.
