Brecon United Methodist Church was built in 1875, when Kemper Road was a “courduroy road," made by placing sand-covered logs perpendicular to the direction of the road over a low or swampy area. The current sanctuary was the original one-room church.
The church used to double as a community center for the community of Brecon. The railroad line next to church was the means for people in the area to ride to work in downtown Cincinnati. Many congregation members have familiar names in the area:Stewart (Stewart Elementary in the Princeton School District), Snider (Snider Road), Blong (Blong Road).
Brecon United Methodist Church provides and supports “Samaritan’s Closet,” housed in the building next to the church—a food and clothing pantry for those in need. Clothing is $2 per brown grocery bag full, and anyone can shop. Food is provided to those who live geographically near the church. Families in need can receive two bags of food free per month.
Brecon UMC also partners with Stewart Elementary School, providing Whiz Kids tutoring on Mondays (with Montgomery Community Church), and offering craft activities for the children at holiday events, such as the Fall Festival and the Winter Holiday Dinner.
The church also offers Live Free children’s summer programming and Vacation Bible Camp. It also supports United Methodist giving initiatives, such as Imagine No Malaria and United Methodist Committee on Relief. Brecon UMC also has social groups, such as crafters, bowling, a monthly lunch group, and United Methodist Women and Men.
