Doing your taxes in the next few weeks?

If you are using a do it yourself program you may wonder which is the better deal in 2014:  Turbo Tax or H&R Block's online program?

Consumer Reports Magazine just put the two most popular online programs to the test.

They tested the free online versions and the paid versions, both CD-ROM and online.

The good news: Consumer Reports says both are simpler and faster, with fewer questions and keystrokes needed this year.

Pros & Cons

-It found TurboTax more expensive: $59 for the paid version versus $39 for H&R Block.

-Consumer Reports calls Block the "better value," especially for "tax novices."

-It says both have good support and Q&A sections.

-However, it says TurboTax might be better for stock investors, small business owners, and anyone with a complicated return, as it has more in-depth sections.

Before You Buy....

Before you purchase any of these programs go to the IRS web site and click on the Free File page: It will let you know if you are eligible to file your taxes free at these programs or others.

And that way you don't waste your money.
