Startup accelerator seeks new media ideas

CINCINNATI - E.W. Scripps Co. announced a partnership with the Brandery startup accelerator in Over-the-Rhine that could bring new media companies to Cincinnati.

Scripps executives will provide mentoring to Brandery startups, while the Scripps Howard Foundation will provide a grant for living expenses to two entrepreneurs with startup technology focused on some aspect of the media industry. Each entrepreneur will receive a stipend of up to $3,500 while they attend Class 4 of the Brandery. It is taking applications through May 1 for its 10-week program in which entrepreneurs refine their marketing and fundraising pitches.

"Scripps is making an investment in the future of journalism with a fresh approach to news gathering and new products for consumption," said Adam Symson, chief digital officer for Scripps, in a press release. "This partnership with The Brandery is a great way for the foundation to engage the broader entrepreneurial community in creating media-related businesses."

Scripps will consider companies with new technologies for news gathering, consumer engagement or revenue generation through the sale of advertising. Scripps is the parent company of WCPO.

Brandery General Manager Mike Bott said some media-related companies have already applied to be part of this year's Brandery class. At least 10 new startups will be formally invited to participate in Class 4 by the third week of May. The program begins in June and ends with a demonstration day where startups make funding pitches to potential investors.

Bott would not say how many applicants are in the running for this year's Brandery class, but he did reveal that the accelerator has applicants from the Ukraine, India, Israel, Spain and France.

"The number of high-quality applicants is way up this year," he said.
