Trenton lieutenant indicted on three felonies

TRENTON, Ohio – The Trenton city manager said the indictment of a police lieutenant caught him – and the officer - off guard.

"Lt. Mike Gillen came into my office (Tuesday) afternoon and indicated to me he was contacted by the local news media and they actually broke the news to him," said city manager John Jones.

Jones said the indictment surprised him for two reasons:

No one with Butler County or the state of Ohio had notified his office about it.

The city had never ordered any investigation of possible wrongdoing.

"It's Mike DeWine's office, the Attorney General's Office," Jones said. And DeWine’s office isn't looking at minor offenses.

Gillen has been indicted on three felonies in connection with his work at the city's impound lot: Tampering with evidence, theft in office, and unauthorized use of property.

"We called that office to ask for information to see if we could find something out and we're waiting to hear a response from them," Jones said.

Jones said a disgruntled worker - no longer with the city - accused Gillen of selling property out of the impound lot years ago, but those allegations were proved to be false.

"The Attorney General's office did call me about four months ago, inquiring about some stuff," Jones said.

Jones said they asked about Gillen and the impound lot but seemed to lose interest after being told of the city's findings and that Gillen no longer works there.

Gillen has been put on paid administrative leave pending the outcome of the case.
