CINCINNATI (AP) -- A judge has found Bengals cornerback Adam Jones not guilty of an assault charge accusing him of punching a woman in the head.
A visiting judge in Hamilton County Municipal Court heard the case after Jones waived a jury trial. The misdemeanor count carries a possible sentence of up to six months in jail.
Jones had pleaded not guilty and was released on his own recognizance after his arrest in June. He was accused of hitting 34-year-old Shannon Wesley outside a downtown Cincinnati nightclub.
The prosecutor said Jones had insulted Wesley and some other women, calling them fat and ugly. The prosecutor said that Wesley poured beer on Jones and Jones struck her, knocking her down.
Jones could be punished by the National Football League under its conduct policy.
The Bengals released the following statement about the verdict:
"The club is pleased for Adam that he's been exonerated. It's good that he's able to put this behind him and turn his full attention to continuing to make strong contributions to help the team win on the field."
