¡Celebrando! 9 ways to celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month in the Tri-State

CINCINNATI - Hispanic Heritage Month kicks off on September 15 and runs through October 15. Whether you’re hoping to absorb some cultural information or connect with your roots, the Tri-State has plenty of events in store.

1. See a play. The ArtsWave, the Cincinnati Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, and local playwright Joe McDonough present “Cincinnati: City of Immigrants.”

This play follows the life story of six characters who represent the six major waves of ethnic immigrants to Cincinnati over the past 180 years: German, Irish, African-American, Jewish, Appalachian, and Hispanic.

  • When: September 13 at 6 p.m.

2. Watch TV. “Latino Americans,” a PBS Documentary, is the first major series to chronicle the rich history and experiences of Latinos, who have become the largest minority group in the U.S.

  • When: September 17, 24, and October 1 at 8 p.m.
  • Where: CET and ThinkTV16

3. Go to a festival. The Latin American and Caribbean UniDiversity Festival is a collaborative event focused on promoting diversity in our community as well as education people on the Hispanic culture and heritage.

  • Where:  Oxford Uptown Parks
  • When: September 20 at 5:30 p.m.

4. Network. The Hispanic Chamber Cincinnati USA Networking Meeting was established for people to make connections while also communicating and learning from a diverse audience.

  • When: September 24 at 6 p.m.
  • Where: Red Cross Cincinnati

5. Have dinner. Sponsored by Nielsen, this National Society of Hispanic MBAs event will include a dinner presentation about diversity within the growing Hispanic market. Registration is required: Email events@cincinnati.nshmba.org

  • Where: Maggiano's at Kenwood
  • When: September 25 at 6 p.m.

6. Go to school. Best-selling author Victor Villaseñor will be the keynote speaker at this Northern Kentucky University Latino Student Affairs celebration.

  • Where: NKU University Center
  • When: September 26 at Noon

7. Catch a ball game. Who doesn’t love a good game combined with a little cultural experience? Reds Hispanic Heritage Night will include player Q&A, dancing with Central and South American groups, a parade of flags from 22 Spanish speaking countries, and a Latin band in the Fan Zone.

  • Where: Great American Ball Park
  • When: September 27 at 7 p.m.

8. Lunch and learn. Come enjoy some Mexican cuisine while connecting with the Hispanic community. Be sure to bring your business cards to have the opportunity to network.

  • When: October 8 at 11:45 a.m.- 1 p.m.

9. Play some soccer--or fútbol. Gather a team of three for an outdoor tournament sponsored by NKU Latino programs and services.
