LINCOLN HTS., Ohio -- A local police officer is barred from his station after being accused of multiple thefts over the past decade.
Lincoln Heights Sgt. LaRoy Smith, 50, was arrested Thursday after a several-month investigation into his suspected wrongdoing, according to Hamilton County Sheriff Jim Neil.
The investigation revealed several suspected thefts dating back to 2006, with the most recent incident occurring Aug. 1. Less than $1,000 was taken during the most recent theft. However, Smith has been charged with a fifth-degree felony due he's a police officer.
Members of the Southwest Ohio Violent Crime Task Force were made aware of allegations of "irregularities" by Lincoln Heights' police chief and officials from the village, Neil said.
Smith was arraigned Friday morning. He was allowed to leave jail without posting bond.
The judge ordered Smith to stay away from the Lincoln Heights police station and made him turn over his firearm until the criminal case is resolved.
Neil said the Hamilton County Sheriff’s Office Criminal Investigative Section is handling the ongoing investigation. Additional charges are possible.
