OXFORD, Ohio (AP) Willie Moore scored 17 points and eighth-seeded Miami (Ohio) held off ninth-seeded Kent State in the opening round of the Mid-American Conference tournament on Monday.
The Redhawks (13-17) advance to play fifth-seeded Ohio in the second round when the tournament resumes Wednesday in Cleveland.
The Golden Flashes (16-16) were within 63-61 after two Darren Goodson free throws at 1:58 but he only made one from the line in-between two Quinten Rollins baskets, giving Miami a 67-62 lead with 33 seconds to go. After Kris Brewer made two free throws for Kent State, the Redhawks iced it by making four in the final 25 seconds.
Will Sullivan and Rollins finished with 13 each for Miami, which went 24 of 31 from the foul line.
Brewer had 15 for Kent State, which was 14 of 17 from the line.
