HIGHLANDS RANCH, Colo. - An 11-year-old in Colorado is brewing a beer that can be used in space.

Michal Bodzianowski hopes it will help him make history.

"I really didn't expect this from the start," Bodzianowski told CNN. "I just designed this experiment to get a good grade in my class."

The goal of his experiment was to see how the fermentation process works in microgravity. It drew the attention of NASA.

"Beer, while known to most people as a party drink, actually has some medical properties," Bodzianowski explained.

In December, his idea will leave the classroom and arrive at the International Space Station.

After that, astronauts will get to see how well beer ferments in space. Bodzianowksi hopes that could help during a medical emergency.

"What a perfect way to show them this is why, this is why you have to learn how to write a lab report because  you may have to write a real proposal one day," science teacher Sharon Combs said.

The project is appropriate for the STEM school in Highlands Ranch, Colorado. The school focuses on science and math.

Teachers say seeing a student's imagination come alive is what it's all about.

"Just the whole idea, I've got an 11-year-old putting beer together in my classroom; that was pretty special," Combs said.

NASA will have to get the test tubes into space.

Bodzianowski is optimistic. "It's going to be the greatest moment of my life, so far," he said.
