CINCINNATI -- “Keep twerking, baby, might earn you a scholarship.”
This lyric from hip hop artist Juicy J’s song “Scholarship” is the impetus behind a new scholarship contest – one in which a Northern Kentucky University student is a finalist.
Gone are the days when students could earn money for higher education simply by participating in extracurricular activities or achieving top marks on college entrance exams.
The rapper is giving a $50,000 scholarship to one female who submits a video explaining why she deserves the money – twerking is optional, but applicants must use the song “Scholarship” in their videos.
Voting ends Monday, Sept. 30, and Juicy J will then personally select the winner out of the top 10 videos on Oct. 7.
NKU freshman communications major Morgan Bruin hopes to be that lucky winner after making it to the finals.
“I’m not the typical twerker…I have a great mind and a great heart,” Bruin told NKU’s student newspaper, The Northerner. She works at a pizza shop to pay for her tuition and says she wants to win the scholarship “to join the Peace Corps and stuff, not just to win it to say I can twerk better than other people.”
Her video has received over 11,400 votes and almost 30,000 YouTube views.
And yes, she did get her mother’s approval before entering the contest.
Crazy? Creative? How do YOU feel about this competition and the new twerking culture? Let’s talk on Twitter, @jennyfromthebak.
