Cincinnati Reds: Chris Heisey, Todd Frazier hit homers to beat Dodgers, end losing streak

GLENDALE, Ariz. - Could Chris Heisey hit his way into the Opening Day lineup in left field?

Heisey hit his fourth homer of the spring - tied for the Cactus League lead - and raised his batting average to .400 in the Reds' 8-2 win over the Dodgers Thursday.

Heisey's three-run homer and Todd Frazier's solo shot helped the Reds break a five-game losing streak.

Heisey leads the Reds in RBI (9) and extra-base hits (7).

Heisey, subbing in left for Ryan Ludwick, went 2-for-3 with a single.

Ludwick, coming off a shoulder surgery in 2013, is hitting .220 with one homer.

The Reds have been waiting three years for Heisey to hit consistently enough to win a starting outfield job.

Heisey had a great spring in 2011, when hit .346 with five homers and 13 RBI.

Playing part-time that season, he had good power numbers (18 homers and 50 RBI in 279 at-bats). He even hit three homers against the Yankees on June 22.

He finished with a .254 batting average, but he also had 78 strikeouts.

Last year, when Ludwick went down on Opening Day, the left field job was Heisey's to win. But it didn't happen.

Heisey's numbers fell way off. He hit .237 with nine homers and 23 RBI in 224 at-bats. He also had 51 strikeouts.

The Reds (5-12) had lost 10 of their last 11 games and came in hitting .235 - 27th in the majors.

But they got 12 hits and jumped on Dodgers starter Paul Maholm for six runs (five earned) and six hits in 2 1/3 innings.

Billy Hamilton (.269) went 0-for-4 with a strikeout.

Joey Votto, hitting .200 with 11 strikeouts, took the day off.

Reds starter Alfredo Simon held the Dodgers to one run and five hits in 4 1/3 innings.

Hanley Ramirez hit a homer of Reds reliever Gary Lee Hyde, who had not given up a run in  4 2/3 innings.

The Dodgers (5-8) played for the second straight day without manager Don Mattingly, who left camp because of a death in his family. Bench coach Tim Wallach was acting manager.
