Did Pete Rose bet on baseball?

That's the question many diehard Charlie Hustle fans were forced to ask themselves after news of a meeting on Feb. 20, 1989 between Rose and MLB executives made its way into the media.

On that day 25 years ago, Rose and his attorneys sat down in a New York office with outgoing commissioner Peter Ueberroth and his eventual replacement, Bart Giamatti.

Over the next few months, Giamatti intensified the investigation, which would turn the sporting world and Cincinnati on its head when a report by lawyer John M. Dowd was released and Sports Illustrated published its infamous cover story.

Rose's life and baseball would never be the same, beginning on this day, 25 years ago.
