Tips for getting your home ready for fall

CINCINNATI -- Check your calendar. It may feel like summer, but autumn arrives this Sunday -- which means its prime time to get the outside of your home ready for cooler changes.

Dominic Walicki and his team are getting a Mount Washington home ready for fall.

The shingles on the roof are in good shape, and new gutters are going up. But if your gutters are old, Dominic says you should make sure they work properly.

"You need to clean out your gutters and not only maintain the holes and cracks, but clean them out," Walicki said. "If you have clogged gutters, the water is going to fill up and it goes back underneath your shingles and wood and into your home. You might not see if for a while, but it will still get in there."

Walicki says replacing or caulking the exterior of sliding glass doors, wood base windows and other entry points will help seal cracks and keep warm air inside.

Fall brings lots of leaves too, so be sure to rake them frequently so they don't kill the grass beneath.

Now is also the time to trim trees around your home back before winter's ice and snow bring them crashing down on your house. Bushes and home adorning wisteria also need to be pruned.

Another very important reminder for inside your home is to get your furnace checked out before temperatures start to fall -- and be sure to change your air filters.
